Span respects and celebrates the older community. This year in October we are holding a range of activities to celebrate older people as part of Seniors’ Month.
Span is offering free trial classes to a range of activities including digital literacy, physical, creative and much more!
There is something for everyone, and everyone is welcome.

Word and Excel (Advanced)
This is a follow on from the introduction to Word and Excel to a more advanced understanding of both of the applications. Suitable for personal use, further employment or study. (Fees apply)

Intro to Computers
If you are a complete beginner or have only basic computer knowledge then this is the class for you. This class will provide you with the necessary computer skills to use a Windows computer in a personal, work or study environment.

Discover your iPad – Introduction, Applications and Internet
Learn at your own pace in a relaxed environment. Lessons are tailored to suit your areas of interest. The experienced tutor can take you through the process. (Fees apply)

A two course home cooked meal is shared in our dining room with other friendly community members. Come along for company, conversation and support.

If you have a question about using digital technology or need support to learn? You will receive helpful answers to your questions and information on how to practice skills to become confident using your device. Bookings essential.

Introduction to Dementia & Services – A Good Place to Start
The overview of this session will provide an introduction to dementia, causes, symptoms and typical changes that may occur. Information of services available to support the person and family. Light afternoon tea included.

“Ghost Train” – A journey into elder abuse
Span will be showing the internationally award winning film “Ghost Train”. A discussion will follow on issues involving senior’s rights, elder abuse, what we can do about it and what support is available. Light afternoon tea provided.

Good Bugs Community Garden Group
Come and join the gardening team in Norma’s Thyme Garden, the community garden at Span. Wheelchair accessible, fun and supportive. You just need your skills, or want to develop skills.
When Wednesdays 10.00am–12.30pm October – December
OM:NI (Older Men: New Ideas)
Men aged 50+ meet fortnightly to discuss what’s happening in their lives, current affairs and topics they choose. Attendance is casual so come along whenever you can.
When Mondays fortnightly 10.00am–12.00pm October – December
Whether you knit, sew or crochet, get together with other crafters to swap skills and stories. Bring your own materials.

How to Start Writing: Skills for Beginners
A short course introducing you to a range of techniques for effective writing of both fiction and non-fiction. You will undertake in-class exercises, sharing your writing in a supportive environment, and read examples of published work for tips and inspiration. (Fees apply)

Thornbury Writers’ Workshop
This group meets to share their writing experiences, give each other feedback, try writing exercises and read work from published authors for tips and inspiration. Guided by a qualified and published author. (Fees apply)

Garden Remedies for Children’s Common Ailments
This workshop teaches you how to confidently respond to your children’s health concerns. You will learn how to make some useful remedies to stock your home medicine chest, and learn how to determine when to treat at home or to seek professional advice. (Fees apply)

This low impact class will strengthen your mind and body. All students report an improved outlook on life, fitness and coordination. A fun and friendly class for all ages. (Fees apply)

Sustainable Sundays at Span
Learn sustainability that will assist you in your house, kitchen and garden. Come to workshops or courses on designing and building permaculture systems, gardening, and preserving and the safety of foods. There are activities for all ages.
